Radon Testing
Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada.
Radon is an invisible, odorless gas. You can't see radon. You can't smell it or taste it. But it may be a problem in your home.
Radon in Ontario
Prevalence: About 8% of homes in Ontario have radon levels above the Health Canada guideline of 200 Bq/m³. However, specific regions like Guelph have reported rates as high as 18%.
2024 Ontario Building Code: Effective January 1, 2025, the updated building code requires new houses to have "rough-ins" for radon mitigation systems, facilitating easier installation of extraction equipment if high levels are later detected.
High-Risk Areas: While no area is "radon-free," elevated levels are more common in regions with uranium-rich soil, such as Elliot Lake, Windsor-Essex, Guelph, and parts of the GTA.

How does Radon get into your house?
Radon can come out of the soil and water and seep into cracks and openings in your home, especially on the lower floor, basement, or crawlspace. Radon gas can get into your home through many openings, including:
-
unfinished floors
-
pipes
-
windows
-
sump pumps
-
cracks in the basement floor or foundation
Radon can get trapped inside your home, especially in basements and crawlspaces that don’t have good ventilation (air flow).
Exposure
The primary routes of potential human exposure to radon are inhalation and ingestion. Radon in the ground, groundwater, or building materials enters working and living spaces and disintegrates into its decay products.
Although high concentrations of radon in groundwater may contribute to radon exposure through ingestion, the inhalation of radon released from water is usually more important.
Should you test for Radon?
YES. Testing is the only way to know your home’s radon levels.
There are no immediate symptoms that will alert you to the presence of radon. It typically takes years of exposure before any problems surface.
Can you fix the problem?
If your home has high concentrations of radon there are ways to reduce it to acceptable levels. Most radon problems can be fixed by first having a radon test by a professional. Then you may wish to look at the list of certified radon mitigators for your province.
